Barnsley FC was established in 1887 and they played their football in the Sheffield and District League from 1890 before moving into the Midlands League on 1895. The club then joined the Football League in 1898 and struggled in Division Two for the first 10 years due to financial difficulties.

From the thirties through to the fifties, Barnsley players found themselves sliding between the Second and Third Division and in the sixties and seventies they hovered between the bottom two divisions.
Over the last 15 years Barnsley have experienced a number of highs and lows. In 1997 manager Danny Wilson made Barnsley news by leading the club to promotion to the top flight for the first time in their history, however they were relegated the following year.
Barnsley suffered greatly following the collapse of ITV Digital and in 2002 the club was forced into administration.
