Bolton a long and glorious tradition being one of 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888. However, it was a long wait for their first piece of silverware but they lifted the FA Cup in 1923, which was remembered as the inaugural final at Wembley Stadium with well over 100,000 spectators crammed into the stadium. The Trotters proceeded to lift the FA Cup on three more occasions (1926, 1929 and 1958). The club also won the Football League North war cup in 1945 by defeating Manchester United over two legs and followed this up with a victory over the Southern winners, Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge. Arguably the most famous of Bolton players - Nat Lofthouse – was a star in the 50s and 60s and scored 285 first class goals for the club whilst they were still plying their trade at their old Burnden Park home. However, the abolition of the minimum wage hit clubs like Bolton hard and they have failed to lift a major trophy since 1958 but they are at least back in the Premier League now. Bolton Wanderers slipped into the basement division in 1987 and started a resurgence that saw them reach the Premier League in 1995. They were relegated after a season but bounced straight back and have remained there ever since. They reached the final of the League Cup in 2004 only to lose to Middlesbrough but they have also experienced European football this century as top six finishes under Sam Allardyce gave them a taste of the UEFA Cup. Further Bolton news has been generated while lower down the leagues and 1997 saw them smash club records for most points in a season (98) and most goals scored in a season (100) and most wins in a season (28) as they lifted the Championship. They have won Division Two in 1909 and 1978 as well as Division Three in 1973. They also lifted the Sherpa Van Trophy in 1989 but their sights are set far higher now and Megson will be hoping to add some more silverware to Bolton Wanderers trophy cabinet this term.
