Bristol City Club Profile
The club was formed in 1894 and was originally known as Bristol South End before changing its name to Bristol City three years later. They were elected into Division Two in 1901 and gained promotion to Division One as champions in 1906. Bristol City enjoyed a fine start to life in the top flight after finishing runners-up to Newcastle 12 months later.
In 1909 they reached their only FA Cup final before losing 1-0 to Manchester United in the showpiece. Two years later the Robins were relegated but reached the FA Cup semi-finals as a Second Division side in 1920. Bristol City suffered another relegation in 1922 and then bounced between Division Two and Division Three during the 1930s.
The club rallied in the mid-1950s spurred on by the prolific goalscoring of club legend John Atyeo. His scoring exploits earned him England recognition and Atyeo also went on to set club records for appearances (597) and goals (314). Bristol City were champions of Division Three South in 1955 but slipped down into what had become simply Division Three in 1960. The Robins were promoted back to Division Two in 1965 and after 11 seasons of contrasting fortunes in the Second Division, Bristol City players returned to the top flight after a 65-year absence in 1976.
The club managed a four-year stay in Division One but when they were relegated in 1980 the club went into freefall and suffered two more relegations under a backdrop of financial problems. Bristol City news improved when they returned to Division Three in 1984 and six years later won promotion to the Second Division and stayed there for five years until relegation in 1995.
