Founder members of the Football League, Burnley FC have lifted every major honour in domestic football with the exception of the League Cup. Their first honour was a Second Division title in the 1897-98 and the club won the FA Cup final for the first time in 1914 after beating Liverpool. The Clarets continued to make their mark and in the 1920-21 season Burnley enjoyed an unbeaten run of thirty league matches as they claimed the first-ever Division One title – that unbeaten record stood for 80 years until being bettered by Arsenal in the 2003-04 campaign. By the outbreak of the Second World War Burnley were back in the Second Division but when organised football resumed they were promoted once again and also reached their first Wembley FA Cup final, losing to Charlton. By the late 1950’s and early 1960’s Burnley players were one of the most feared sides around and in the 1959-1960 season they claimed the title on the final day of the season but two years later they were runners-up in both the First Division and the FA Cup. The early 1980’s saw a decline in fortunes and the club were relegated to the Fourth Division just 10 years after their last game in the top flight. Furthermore, they had to win their last game of the season against Leyton Orient to avoid being relegated to the Conference. The 1990’s sparked a revival in Burnley news and the Clarets created history by becoming only the second team (Wolves were the first) to win all four divisional titles in domestic football and escaped from the basement league after seven seasons.
