Cardiff City Club Profile
Cardiff City's big claim to fame is that they are the only non-English club to have lifted the FA Cup. Way back in 1927 Cardiff City made news beating Arsenal 1-0 and won the first FA Cup Final ever to be broadcast on BBC Radio.
Cardiff had reached the FA Cup final two years earlier only to lose to Sheffield United and they had to wait a further 81 years for their next appearance at the final stages. That was last year when they were undone 1-0 by Portsmouth but football is firmly on the map once again in the Capital city of Wales.
Cardiff City may have had a barren run in the latter half of the twentieth century but they were runners up in the First division (Premier League) back in 1924 when Huddersfield pipped them to the title on goal average only. Cardiff also lifted the Charity Shield in 1927 and were regarded as one of the biggest names in English football of that era.
They last appeared in the top flight of English football in 1962 but the Bluebirds managed to reach the semi finals of the European Cup-Winners' Cup in 1968 only to be defeated by Hamburg. Jimmy Scoular was arguably their most successful post-war manager as he guided them through some tough European ties and was responsible for giving a 16-year-old Cardiff City player called John Toshack his debut. They have also lifted the Welsh FA Cup on 22 occasions although the last time was back in 1993.
