Chelsea Club Profile

Chelsea Football Club, originally known as The Pensioners, was formed in 1905 and Stamford Bridge has always been their home. They have had two periods of success, one in the late 1960s and early 1970s and the other from the late 1990s to the present day.

In the early 1980s the Blues suffered crippling financial problems and were forced to sell the best Chelsea players.  Big Chelsea news saw Ken Bates buy the club for the nominal sum of £1 before selling the club to Russian oil magnate Roman Abramovich for £140 million in 2003.

Chelsea have won three league titles, four FA Cups, four League Cups, two Cup Winners' Cups and reached last year's Champions League final. Two successive Premier League triumphs under Jose Mourinho raised expectations even higher but that elusive European title remains a priority for new manager Felipe Scholari.

The likes of Glenn Hoddle, Ruud Gullit, Luca Vialli, Claudio Ranieri, Mourinho and Grant have all tried and failed - so now it's over to Big Phil.
