Colchester United Club Profile

The U’s recent stint in the Championship was the best in the club’s history and the finish of tenth in 2006/07 was by far their highest ever finish.

Unfortunately their last season at Layer Road coincided with relegation back to League One but the future seems more assured at the Weston Homes Community Stadium rather than their ramshackle old home.

Colchester United entered the Football League in 1950 and apart from a two-year spell in the Conference (Blue Square Premier) between 1990 and 1992 they have remained there ever since.

The lifted the Conference and FA Trophy in 1992 but trophies have been non-existent during their tenure in the Football League.

In 1997, the U’s reached the final of the Auto Windscreens Shield only to lose against Carlisle and were runners-up in League One in 2005/06.
