Crewe Alexandra Club Profile

Crewe Alexandra Football Club was formed in 1877 when it was decided to adopt a football club within the already established cricket club.  The club first came to national prominence when they reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 1888, before becoming original members of Division Two in 1892, but they failed to be re-elected four years later after finishing bottom.

It would not be until 1921, and the formation of Division Three North, that the Alex would regain a place in the Football League. When the north and south sections merged in 1958, Crewe Alexandra went into Division Four having finished bottom of the Northern sections in the three previous campaigns.  In 1963, the Railwaymen won promotion to the Third Division but then suffered relegation the following year before going up once again in 1969.

In June 1983, Crewe appointed Dario Gradi as manager and his ability to groom young talent became evident as Crewe Alexandra players David Platt and Geoff Thomas both came to prominence at Gresty Road.

Crewe then won promotion in 1989 but were relegated two years later before clinching promotion once again in 1994. By this time the likes of Neil Lennon, Robbie Savage and Danny Murphy were being nurtured at the club by Gradi and later Dean Ashton was to thrive there also before being sold to Norwich.

In 1997, Crewe emerged victorious in the play-offs and took their place in the second tier of English football, staying there for five years before their relegation in 2002. However, to the surprise of many, they won promotion at the first time of asking 12 months later.
