Crystal Palace's most successful season to date was back in 1991 when Steve Coppell led them to third place in the Premier League and they lifted the now defunct Zenith Data Systems Cup by beating Everton at Wembley. One year previously they had drawn 3-3 with Manchester United in the FA Cup final before losing the replay 1-0 but these were halcyon days in SE25. Coppell moulded an exciting side with a strike force of Crystal Palace players spearheaded by Mark Bright and Ian Wright that terrorised defences. The Crystal Palace news annals and trophy cabinet also holds the Division One (Championship) champions trophy from 1979 and 1994 as well as the Division Three South trophy from 1921. The club was founded in on September 10, 1905 by workers at the Crystal Palace and played its home games at the same venue. They moved to 'The Nest' which was opposite Selhurst Station in 1918 and were finally accepted into the Football League in 1920 after many successful season in the Southern League. On January 3, 1922 the club purchased Selhurst Park for £2,750 and moved in for the start of the 1924-25 season. In 1973-74 Crystal Palace changed its colours from sky blue and claret to red and blue, which was believed to have been derived from Barcelona. It was during this period that Jim Cannon started playing for the club and centre half went on to appear on 663 occasions for the Eagles. Dougie Freedman, Simon Rodger, Paul Hinshelwood and Nigel Martyn all topped the 300 plus appearance for Palace too with the club's all time top five goalscorers being Peter Simpson, Ted Smith, Ian Wright, Mark Bright and Clinton Morrison. An exciting team emerged in 1980 and was dubbed 'The team of the 80s' after a long unbeaten run but faded to finish 13th. However, the likes of Vince Hilaire remain etched in Palace folklore and the good times returned again in the nineties with Coppell leading them through another golden period.
