Darlington Club Profile

Darlington Football Club was formed in 1883, and they held a prominent position amongst the amateur ranks in the North East and North Yorkshire before turning professional in 1908.

The club gained entry into the Football League as original members of Division Three North in 1921 and four years later they were promoted to Division Two as champions.

But their stay in Division Two lasted just two seasons before dropping out, after which they remained in Division Three North until the north and south sections merged in 1958 – with Darlo then finding themselves in the Division Four.

Darlington’s next promotion came in 1966 as runners-up behind Doncaster, but they suffered an immediate relegation the following year.

The Quakers then spent 19 seasons in the bottom tier of English football before winning promotion after finishing in third place in 1985. However, once again the club were unable to consolidate their position in Division Three and were relegated in 1987.

Disaster struck in 1989 when the club were relegated to the Conference after finishing bottom of the entire Football League, however they bounced back immediately after winning the title 12 months later.

Their success continued as they won the Division Four title but, as in their past, they didn’t last long at that level and were relegated in 1992.

In 2000, Darlington came close in the play-offs, thanks largely to the 25 goals of Marco Gabbiadini, but narrowly missed out in the end.

Darlo have been challenging for a play-off place again in recent years, as they were last season until a ten-point penalty for their financial indiscretions ended any promotion hopes and led to a mass exodus of players.
