Doncaster Rovers Club Profile

Doncaster Rovers was formed in 1879 by a group of young railway apprentices who got together to play a match against the Institute for the Deaf and Dumb. For the first six years they played on any pitch they could borrow, usually on the playing fields behind their eventual ground Belle Vue.

In 1891 they won the Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup Challenge Cup and in that same year were elected to the Midlands League, winning the title in 1896-97 and 1898-99. In the summer of 1901 Rovers were elected to the Football League and lasted two years before being voted out in a re-election vote and a season in the Midlands League was followed by re-election for the Football League.
Doncaster Rovers went into voluntary liquidation in 1914 and the ground was closed down during the First World War and used as a military depot. The club was reformed in 1920 and two years later they moved to their new ground Belle Vue.

In the 1934-35 campaign they were promoted to Division Two as champions and lasted two years before being relegated. A series of promotions and relegations between Division Two and Division Four then followed over the next 25 years but in 1983 the club found themselves back in Division Four.

In 1998 Rovers were relegated to the Conference and spent five years in non-league football before beating Dagenham and Redbridge 3-2 after extra time in the 2003 Conference play-off final to secure their place back in the Football League. The first game in their plush new Keapmoat Stadium was played against Huddersfield on New Year's Day 2007.
