Hereford United Football Club was founded in 1924. At that time there were four amateur teams playing in the area of Hereford and two of these sides decided to merge in order to play a higher standard of football. Those two teams were St Martins and RAOC, who united to form Hereford United, while Hereford City and Hereford Thistle remained as they were. They soon progressed through the local leagues and reached the Southern League in 1939. Hereford became known as one of the top teams outside the Football League due to reaching the first round of the FA Cup for 21 consecutive seasons before they were elected to the Football League. In 1971, the Bulls made the football word take notice. They reached the FA Cup third round and were drawn against mighty Newcastle United, who at that time had the great Malcolm MacDonald in the Magpies' side. Hereford battled out a 2-2 draw at St James Park and in the replay at Edgar Street, in front of the BBC cameras, Hereford player Ronnie Radford fired home one of the most famous FA Cup goals of all time in a shock 2-1 victory, sparking unforgettable scenes of celebration. A barren couple of decades were to follow, however, and in 1997 the Hereford United was relegated to the Conference but things started to improve when manager Graham Turner returned to the club – winning promotion from the Conference in 2006 and again to League One last season.
