Hull City was founded in 1904 and before last term the highest they had ever finished was third in the old Second Division in the 1909-10 season. Their greatest ever achievement in a cup competition came in 1930, when they reached the semi-final of the FA Cup.
In the early 1980's, Hull City had slipped to the Fourth Division and faced financial ruin after falling into receivership. However, they survived and in 1983 manager Colin Appleton led his young side, featuring Hull City players the likes of Brian Marwood, Steve McClaren and Billy Whitehurst to promotion.
Appleton then left to take over at Swansea and Brian Horton took over the reins, winning promotion to the Second Division in 1985, where the Tigers stayed for five years before being relegated in 1991.
Before moving to their new home the KC Stadium in 2002, Hull played their home games at Boothferry Park.
