A titanic battle raged during 2007 between Ken Bates, Duncan Revie and Simon Morris to gain control of Leeds after they had fallen into administration. It was messy and very public but Bates eventually prevailed and has set about rebuilding a club that had fallen on hard times. The ten-point deduction scuppered their automatic promotion chances last year but The Whites still reached the play-off final only to lose to Doncaster. Leeds United were formed in 1919 from the ashes of Leeds City and the most notable fact of their early years was the then world record sale of centre forward John Charles to Juventus for £65,000 in the 1950s Leeds' glory years started when Don Revie took over at the helm at Elland Road and between 1965-1974 they were never out of the top four. Their success included two First Division (Premier League) titles in 1969 and 1974, FA Cup (1972), League Cup (1968) and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1968 and 1971. However, Leeds were often the bridesmaids under Revie and finished second in the first division on no fewer than five occasions in ten years as well as losing in three FA Cup finals. They were also runners-up in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup. When Revie left to take over as England boss there was an infamous 44-day spell where Brian Clough took charge before Jimmy Armfield was named boss and he guided them to the European Cup final in 1975 only to suffer defeat once again - this time to Bayern Munich. A slow decline followed by eventual relegation in 1982 and Leeds United languished in the Second Division until Howard Wilkinson took charge in 1988 and guided Leeds United players back to the top flight of English football in 1990. He guided them to fourth in the First division in 1991 and then to their first League title since 1974 when he became the last English manager to win the top flight in 1992. However, they were unable to sustain the success and after Wilkinson and then George Graham's departure, David O'Leary eventually took charge. He guided them to consecutive top five finishes and a Champions League semi-final against Valencia but financial problems set in and resulted in the club going into administration and being relegated to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history in 2007.
