Leyton Orient Club Profile

Orient had a host of names in the early years such as Eagle Cricket Club, Orient Football club and Clapton Orient.   They adopted the prefix Leyton after World War II, dropped it in 1966 and then returned back to Leyton Orient in 1987.

Undoubtedly the golden era for Leyton Orient was in the 1960's when they reached the top flight of English football for the only time in their history.

In 1961-62 The O's finished second in the Second division and spent one solitary season in the top flight before returning to the second tier again.

However, during their short stint with the elite, Orient famously beat local rivals West Ham home and away and they spent the majority of the seventies in the Second division with famous Leyton Orient players such as Joe Mayo and John Chiedozie as well as reaching an FA Cup semi-final in 1978.

A decline set in and the O's tumbled into the bottom tier until promotion was secured under Frank Clark in 1989.

However, relegation soon followed and an 11-year spell in League Two was finally ended in 2006 when a last-day victory at Oxford condemned them to the Conference and gave Leyton Orient their fist automatic promotion for 36 years.

They have finished 20th and 14th in the ensuing two campaigns and it looks like being a struggle this year as the O's try and survive in the third tier of English football.
