Despite City's position as one of English football's established Premier League clubs, they have long suffered from being in the shadow of neighbours Manchester United.

Manchester City's history is a respectable one yet they have not won a major honour in over 32 years. The club changed its name from Ardwick FC to Manchester City in 1894 and they have twice been League Champions with four FA Cup wins to their name.  They have also won the League Cup twice and collected European honours by winning the Cup Winners' Cup.

But their 1976 League Cup win over Newcastle was the last piece of silverware to head to this particular part of Manchester although they did reach the 1981 FA Cup Final only to lose to Tottenham after a replay at Wembley. Such was their decline that they needed a Wembley play-off win over Gillingham to win promotion after being relegated to the third tier of the domestic game.

The club's glory days were under Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison when star Manchester City players like Francis Lee, Colin Bell and Mike Summerbee were fans' favourites.  But now the signs are that City are on the up again. New owners clearly want success in return for their investment and, after just one season in charge, Sven-Goran Eriksson paid the price for slipping to ninth in the Premier League and he parted company. New manager Mark Hughes will now look to take the Blues to the next level.
