Middlesbrough Club Profile

Middlesbrough Football Club was formed in 1876 and the Riverside Stadium has been their home since moving from Ayresome Park in 1995.

The highest they have ever finished in the top flight is third during the 1913-14 season and in their long history Boro have only spent two years outside the top two divisions. The club came close to folding in 1986 but were save by a consortium including then board member and now chairman Steve Gibson.

Middlesbrough were controversially deducted three points for failing to fulfil a fixture against Blackburn during the 1996-97 season and subsequently relegated. Boro were promoted back to the Premiership the following season under manager Bryan Robson and have spent the last 11 years in the top flight.

The club's only major trophy came in 2004 when manager Steve McClaren saw his Middlesbrough players beat Bolton in the Carling Cup final.

Jack Charlton, Malcolm Allison, Lennie Lawrence and Terry Venables are four names to have managed the club.
