Millwall Football Club was formed in 1885 and was originally known as Millwall Rovers. They did not gain entry into the Football League until 1920 when they became original members of Division Three South, before which they had already established themselves as FA Cup giantkillers having reached the semi-finals in both 1900 and 1903.
Millwall gained promotion after winning the Division Three South title in 1928 and although they dropped down again, the Lions did manage to reach another FA Cup semi final in 1937. The following season, 1937-38, Millwall again won the Division Three South title but they suffered a downturn in fortunes after the Second World War and had slipped into Division Four by 1958.
More promotions and relegations followed throughout the 1960's and 1970s and in 1983 the club looked odds-on for another relegation but were saved under manager George Graham and two years later they were promoted back to Division Two.
Then in 1988, Millwall shocked everyone by taking the Division Two title to claim their place in the top flight for the first time, with Millwall players Tony Cascarino and Teddy Sheringham two of their stars.
The Lions managed 10th place in their first season in Division One but were relegated the following year. In 2004, the club had its greatest moment when they reached the FA Cup Final under manager Dennis Wise, only to lose 3-0 to Manchester United.
