Newcastle United have been one of the biggest clubs in England since two local clubs formed in 1892 to become the side we know today. But the frustrating fact for their legions of supporters is that Newcastle have never won a trophy since their Inter Cities Fairs Cup win over Ujpest Doza in 1969. It has not been for the want of trying of course, from Malcolm Macdonald, to Kevin Keegan, to record scorer Alan Shearer, Newcastle have never been short of folk heroes. The stature of that brand of Newcastle United player has never been reflected in the club's modern-day honours list and it was Keegan, for the second time, who found himself the latest man to try and fail to bring success to St James' Park. But Newcastle were bringing silverware back to the north east before their current drought. The Magpies have won the First Division Championship four times and the FA Cup six times, although their last league title was in 1927. Between 1951 and 1955, Newcastle won the FA Cup three times when Jackie Milburn was their star player. But despite reaching the final on a number of occasions since, they have never repeated that. Their decline throughout the 1980s and early 1990s saw Newcastle United dipping into the old Second Division before Keegan came close to winning the Premiership in 1996 after letting a 12-point lead slip. When Keegan quit the club in 1997, a series of high profile managers tried to turn the tide but the likes of Bobby Robson, Kenny Dalglish, Ruud Gullit and Graeme Souness tried and failed to win trophies.
