Portsmouth Football Club was formed in 1898 and the team's first manager was Frank Bretell and under his guidance the club had a successful first season, winning 20 of their 28 games in the Southern Division, finishing runners-up to Tottenham. The club had an excellent run in the FA Cup in the 1928-29 campaign, before losing to Bolton in the final but they actually lifted the FA Cup in 1939, beating Wolves 4-1 in the final. Pompey won the League One Championship two seasons in succession in 1949 and 1950, with goals from Portsmouth players such as Peter Harris and Ike Clarke. Portsmouth have had a less successful time in the modern era, although they did win promotion to the old First Division in 1987-88 under Alan Ball, before being relegated a year later. Milan Mandaric took over the club in 1998 and four years later manager Harry Redknapp led Pompey to the First Division championship and into the Premiership for the first time. After keeping the team in the top flight, Redknapp left the club midway through the 2004-05 season in acrimonious circumstances to join arch rivals Southampton. However, in 2005 Redknapp returned to replace Alain Perrin and managed to narrowly avoid relegation after looking destined for the drop all season. Since then, Redknapp improved the squad year-by-year, culminating in last season's FA Cup triumph against Cardiff at Wembley.
