Preston North End can proudly claim they were the inaugural winners of the Football League as they lifted the title back in 1889. Just to prove it was no fluke they backed that up with an FA Cup win in the same year before retaining their title in 1890. They were also the only club to go through an entire League season unbeaten until Arsenal repeated that feat in 2003-04. This PNE team were known as ‘The Invincibles,’ and set a standard for Preston that has yet to be surpassed. The FA Cup was lifted again in 1938 and they have also been crowned champions of Division Two (now the Championship) on three occasions, as well as lifting the title in the third tier of English football twice. Undoubtedly the most famous Preston North End player is Tom Finney, who was capped 76 times for England between 1946 and 1958. He holds the record for most career goals (210) for the club and led them to the FA Cup Final in 1954 where they lost 3-2 to West Bromwich Albion. The year previously they had finished runners-up in the First Division (Premier League) to Arsenal by a goal average of just one. The Lilywhites also reached the FA Cup Final in 1964, being beaten by West Ham United, but were still a force to be reckoned with in English football. Indeed, the history of Preston North End is an enviable one and that fact has been recognised by the positioning of the National Football Museum at Deepdale Preston fell on hard times between the late sixties and mid-nineties and were still in the bottom tier of English football as recently as 1996. Gary Peters led them to the League Two title before his successor, David Moyes, led them to the League One title. They lost in the Championship play-off final under Moyes and that feat was repeated by Billy Davies, who also saw the Lilywhites fall at the semi-final hurdle. However, a return to the promised land of the Premier League is the final hurdle that North End seem unable to jump having been out of the top flight for 47 years.
