Rochdale Football Club was formed in 1907 and throughout their entire history they have experienced just one promotion and one relegation – with the promotion coming in 1969 and the relegation five years later. Shortly after the First World War, the Football League was expanded and the club unsuccessfully applied to join, although in 1921 they became founder members of the Football League Division Three North. The Spotland outfit do hold one unique record though, as they are the only side to reach a major final whilst plying their trade in the basement division - losing the League Cup final to Norwich in 1962. Since their relegation to the fourth tier in 1974, Dale have spent the last 35 years in that division, longer than any other club in that league. But in recent years there have been signs that could all be about to change under promising young manager Keith Hill. Hill has steered the club to the play-offs in the last two seasons playing a brand of attractive football with a young squad. Unfortunately, their campaign petered out in 2008/09 with just three victories in their last 15 matches, including a play-off loss against Gillingham. However, Rochdale have managed to keep hold of most of their talented youngsters and the early season signs in 2009/10 suggest another top seven finish is on the cards.
