Bramall Lane was originally a cricket ground but, in March 1889, a meeting was held and it was decided that a football team be run in conjunction with the Sheffield United Cricket Club.

The club’s first season began in 1889 and the same year saw Sheffield United’s first involvement in the FA Cup. Three years later the Football League formed a Second Division and United were given a place in it. They won promotion at the first attempt and took their position in the First Division, where they remained until 1934. During those early the club won the First Division Championship once, in 1898, and the FA Cup on four different occasions.

The immediate post-war period was marked by a series of relegations and promotions, with United moving back and forth from the top flight no fewer then seven times.

During the 1971 season, the Blades enjoyed a successful run in the First Division and boasted a 22 match unbeaten run with a side that included legendary Sheffield United players Tony Currie and Alan Woodward.

However, things soon took a turn for the worse and Sheffield United were relegated in 1976 and by 1981 they found themselves in the Fourth Division. Things improved the following year and the Blades won promotion to the Third Division and then to the Second Division in 1984, but were relegated in 1988.

But they were soon back in the top flight under manager Dave Bassett and finished in 14th place in the first ever Premiership season in 1992-93.
