Sheffield Wednesday Club Profile

Sheffield Wednesday is one of the oldest football clubs in the world having been formed in September 1867. The club members would meet on Wednesdays, but the suffix “Wednesday” was not added to the name of the Sheffield Football Club until 1929.

The club turned professional in 1887 and began playing their games at the Olive Grove Ground, before joining the Football League in 1892. They won FA Cup in 1896, 1907 and 1935 as well as the First Division title in 1903 and 1904.

During the 1950s Wednesday became a yo-yo team as they were relegated to the Second Division four times and promoted to the top flight on four occasions, but by the 1960s the club had once again established themselves in the First Division, reaching the FA Cup Final in 1966. During that decade, though, the club was rocked when three Sheffield United players were sentenced to prison for their part in a bribery scandal.

By the end of the 1970s the Owls found themselves in the Third Division, but Jack Charlton led the club to promotion in 1980. Charlton stayed at Hillsborough for five years but it was Howard Wilkinson who masterminded promotion to the top flight in 1984.

Sheffield United then won their first silverware for 50 years under Ron Atkinson by beating Manchester United 1-0 in the League Cup Final in 1991. Atkinson then left to join Aston Villa and it was Trevor Francis’ Wednesday side that reached the 1993 FA Cup Final and the League Cup Final in the same, losing on both occasions to Arsenal.
