Southend United Club Profile

Southend United Football Club was formed in 1906 and they became original members of Division Three in 1920, later to become Division Three south, finishing in third place in both 1932 and 1950.

When the north and south sections merged in 1958, Southend entered the Third Division and remained at that level until they were relegated in 1966. The Shrimpers were then promoted as runners-up behind Grimsby in 1972 but suffered another relegation four years later.

More promotions and relegations followed throughout the 1980's but in 1992, after another promotion from Division Three the previous season, Southend United looked on the verge of a shock place in the first ever Premier League.

The goals of Brett Angell helped the club climb to second in the table midway through the campaign but they could not sustain their challenge and fell away in the second half of the season. Two of the most famous Southend players are Stan Collymore and PFA chairman Chris Powell, both of whom went on to play for England.

One of the club's most memorable victories came in November 2006 when Freddy Eastwood scored the only goal in a fourth round Carling Cup tie against a Manchester United side that had ten internationals in their line-up, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.
