Stockport County Football Club was formed in 1883 by members of the Wycliffe Congregational Chapel. The club was originally known as Heaton Norris Rovers but became Stockport County in 1890, the year before they turned professional. Stockport were elected into Division Two of the Football League in 1900 but failed to be re-elected in 1904, but were re-admitted a year later. Stockport Country remained in Division Two until 1921 when they suffered relegation into the newly-formed Division Three North, but earned an instant return 12 months later after winning the title ahead of Darlington. After four seasons of struggle in Division Two, Stockport returned to Division Three North in 1926 and, despite several near misses, stayed at that level for the next 11 seasons. The Hatters were back in the Second Division by 1937, only to be relegated the next year, and remained in Division Three North until the north and south sections merged in 1958, when they were placed in Division Three - only to suffer immediate relegation and the Hatters then stayed in Division Four for eight seasons. In the 1966-67 campaign, County were crowned Fourth Division Champions but could only manage three seasons at this level until their relegation once more in 1970. Stockport then spent over two decades in the Fourth Division until the unlikely appointment of Uruguayan Danny Bergara coincided with an upturn in fortunes, wining automatic promotion in 1991. Then, after a hat-trick of play-off failures, Country finally escaped the third tier of English football when they won automatic promotion behind Bury in 1997.
