The early 1980s was the era that most Swansea City supporters remember fondly as they reached the First Division (Premier League) in 1981, as well as winning three consecutive Welsh Cups and appearing in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

The Swans have lifted the Welsh Cup on a further seven occasions and won League One in 2008 and League Two in 2000. They have also won the Football League Trophy in its various guises on two separate occasions, in 1994 and 2006, but supporters will be delighted now they are not eligible to compete in that competition this season.

As recently as 1975 Swansea City faced having to re-apply for their Football League status but Toshack led them to three promotions and a sixth place finish in 1982. However, they were relegated in 1983 and 1984 before being formally wound up in 1985. The future of the club hung in the balance for 12 months before a further relegation sent them back into the basement.

Despite yo-yoing between the bottom two divisions, Swansea’s lowest point arrived in 2003 when they needed a last day triumph to avoid being relegated to the Blue Square Premier League.

But the move to a new stadium in 2005 has coincided with a revival and Swansea City are now looking like a club that could recreate the halcyon days enjoyed under Toshack.
