Tranmere Rovers joined the Football League in 1921 when they were admitted to the old Division Three North. Their most famous player during their early years was Dixie Dean who made his debut at the age of 16 in 1924 and scored 27 goals in 30 games before moving on to join Everton. Between 1991 and 2001 they were in the second tier of the English league, reaching the playoffs three times and the League Cup final once before being relegated. John Aldridge, the former Liverpool striker who scored nearly 500 goals in his professional career, was appointed player-manager of Tranmere in March 1996 and remained at the helm for five years, although he hung up his boots in 1998. His predecessor was John King, who took Rovers from the brink of losing their league status to the brink of reaching the Premiership. They clinched the Divison Three North title in 1938 and that is still their only league championship to date. It was bleak being a Tranmere Rovers supporter after that until John King took charge of the struggling fourth division club in 1987. King ensured they avoided relegation to the Conference before guiding them to promotion in 1989. A Wembley win over Bristol Rovers followed the next year in the final of the Leyland DAF Trophy before promotion followded in 1991 to the second tier of English football along with a losing Leyland DAF final against Birmingham. King guided his Tranmere Rover players to three consecutive play-off campaigns in the Championship from 1993 as well as a semi-final in the League Cup before resigning in 1996. Aldridge took over at the helm and his most notable achievement was to guide them to the quarter finals of the FA Cup in 2000 and the final of the League Cup in the same year. They lost 2-1 to Leicester City but that remains the high poiint in their history and they were relegated to League One in 2001 and have remained there ever since.
