Walsall Club Profile

The Saddlers were formed in 1882 as Walsall Town and Walsall Swifts amalgamated and arguably their finest hour came in 1933 when they beat the legendary Arsenal side of that era in the FA Cup at Highbury.

They repeated that feat in 1984, albeit in the League Cup, before reaching the semi-final and drawing 2-2 at Anfield. They lost the second leg 2-0 at Fellows Park but that cup run put the Black Country town on the map.

Walsall reached the old second division in the early sixties but drifted out of the limelight until millionaire entrepreneur Terry Ramsden took charge in 1986.

However, despite promotion to the third tier of English football it soon turned sour as Ramsden's empire collapsed and the club was taken to the brink.

Barrie Blower saved Walsall from extinction in 1989 and Jeff Bonser then took over at the helm as the club relocated to Bescot Stadium in 1990. In 1999 the club climbed back into the second tier of English football under the guidance of Ray Graydon and were then relegated and promoted in successive seasons.

The Saddlers then enjoyed two more seasons in the Championship under Colin Lee with arguably the best team of Walsall players in the club's history. However, in 2004 Lee had gone and the club were relegated and the slide continued under Paul Merson as the Saddlers fell into the bottom tier of English football once more.

Richard Money won the League Two title in his first season at the helm in 2007 and last term saw a season of stability but Money left in the summer and was replaced by Jimmy Mullen.
