Watford Football Club was formed in 1881 and began life with the name Watford Rovers. In 1883 they changed their name to West Herts, before becoming Watford in 1898 when they merged with Watford St Mary’s. The club were one of the original members of Division Three in 1920, taking their place in Division Three South the following year. In 1958 the Hornets were placed in the newly-created Division Four, winning promotion to Division Two just two years later. At the end of the 1960s there was a burst of activity at Vicarage Road with Watford winning the Third Division title in 1969 but, although they struggled for survival the following season, they did reach the FA Cup semi-finals. By 1975 the club had dropped into the Fourth Division but the arrival of Elton John as chairman and manager Graham Taylor signalled the start of a halcyon decade for Watford. The Hornets were Fourth Division champions in 1978, Division Three runners-up in 1979, Division Two runners-up in 1982 and in their first season in the top flight they actually finished second. The following season the club reached the FA Cup Final only to lose 2-0 to Everton. After Taylor left, however, Watford were relegated to the Second Division in 1988 and went down to Division Three in 1996. Taylor then returned to guide the club to the Third Division title in his first season back and then in 1999 Watford beat Bolton in the play-off final to secure their place in the Premier League.
