The club was founded in 1895 as the company team of the Thames Ironworkers. In 1900 they were elected to the Southern League and also that year became a limited liability company under the name of West Ham United – thereby severing their association with the Ironworks. In 1904 they moved to their current ground, Upton Park, which was originally a cabbage patch where a Catholic church and reformatory stood. In the 1922-23 season West Ham United finished runners-up in the Second Division and also appeared in the first ever FA Cup final played at Wembley (the White Horse final), losing 2-0 to Bolton. The Hammers have won the FA Cup on three occasions – 1965, 1975 and 1980 – and also lifted the Cup Winners Cup in 1965, defeating TSV Munich in the final. In 1999 they ended a 19-year absence from European competition after qualifying for the UEFA Cup after winning the InterToto Cup. The most famous West Ham United player in their history is the great Bobby Moore, who tragically died from cancer in 1993. Moore captained England to World Cup glory in 1966 against West Germany, alongside West Ham team-mates Sir Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters.
