Goalkeeping practices - In threes
Similar in content and context to the previous practice. Once again quite intensive and demanding, although good technique is still required by coaches.
Practice; Three goalkeepers X, Y, and Z. Alternating their roles as server or goalkeeper in the following exercises:
1.X and Y with a ball each. They kick or throw the ball at Z who has to catch and then return with a good throw. Servers can vary their service high, low, fast direct, lobbed to keep Z under pressure.
2.X and Y with a ball each, all three must remain at least 20 metres apart throughout this exercise while moving round the field. So, on the move X kicks the ball high for Z to catch at the highest point. As Z is about to catch, Y serves kicking high for X to catch again, so both balls are on the air at the same time. Z must throw accurately back to the servers who maintain the continuous service, keeping Z in action.
3.X in a full size goal. Y and Z 10 meters out throw/pass the ball to try and score with alternate serves...always giving X a reasonable chance of saving. Changing the height and pace of the serve to keep X at full stretch.
4.Y in a full size goal, Z and X using cross angled shots or crosses driven low across the six yard box for Y to dive out or palm away from the danger area...although it is better if the goalkeeper can hold on to the ball.(see diagram 4). NB it is important the service does need to have some pace behind it.
5.Y and Z with a ball each stand 3 metres away on the opposite sides of a goal (which is no wider then 4 metres)where X stands on the goal line.
Y serves X saves, then throws back to Y, immediately turning to face Z who serves as X turns - forcing quick reaction saves and continuous movement. The exercise is repetitive, X constantly saving, returning the ball, and turning ready to face the next serve (see diagram):
