Goalkeeping (Angles - developing the practice)

Goalkeeping practices

The introduction of 2 more players X2 and X1 will develop the practice. The player starting with the ball is X3 and he can either pass to X1 or X2, or simply run the ball forward and shoot at goal himself.

(a) If X1 receives the ball (see diagram) he can control, then shoot from the angle on the right hand side of the penalty area, or cut inside and shoot with his left foot.

(b) If X2 receives from X3, he may either let the ball run then shoot from the narrow angle, OR check back across the penalty area and shoot right footed at goal.

(c) The third option is for X3 to run and shoot at goal himself.

THE GOALKEEPER must

(1) Manoeuvre the angle himself (around the goal area), changing his position whenever the ball is moved across the field.

(2) Consider closing down the target area whenever possible by advancing from his line. THE COACH SEES THE BEST POSITION AND ANGLE, BY STANDING BEHIND THE GOAL (see diagram).

(3) Keep his balance, and present as big a target as possible, always prepared to adjust his feet and his position.
