Full Back 6 - Delivering to forward players

In the modern game full backs are often involved in setting up attacks. They do receive the ball from the goalkeeper or another outfield player and set up the play from the flank.

Diagram One:

DIAGRAM KEY:

FB = Full Back
W = Winger
CB = Centre Back
MF = Midfielder
Att = Attacker
x = Opposition

-  -  - > = Path of Ball
-----> = Path of Player

Diagram one shows the possible outlets a full back can have when in possession:

a. The pass to the winger can be either ahead of him to chase or one for him to come back to ensure safe possession.

b. A pass inside to his own central defender either in front of him or one deliberately behind again playing for safety.

c. A pass inside to a midfielder again looking to progress an attack.

d. Looking for a more forward move by playing straight to a central attacker. The attacker can either wait to receive (depending on how he is marked) or come towards the full back to get away from his marker.

Diagram Two:

This shows the full back playing directly into the attack using a reduced area of the pitch.

In this diagram the Full Back has time and options before making a decision. He has to be aware of the marking, the technique and type of pass required, and the support after passing.

He has to consider receiving skills needed for the other players all in all the key factors for creating space.

Diagram Three:

Now in a more forward position, the full back has a slightly different role and he will have less time as there are defenders (X) in the practice.

In this practice the shortened pitch is behind him, he is working in a tighter area and he may find himself playing as the attacking flanker running with the ball, crossing into the penalty area, and even perhaps dribbling.

KEY FACTORS FOR THE PRACTICES:

Look to create space.
Good technique needed in passing.
Consider receiving skills and make the right pass selection.
Support after the pass is made......especially in the opponents half of the pitch.
