Bolton manager Gary Megson will step up his search for fresh faces next week.

With a 10-day gap until the Trotters next play because of their earlier than expected FA Cup exit, Megson has some time to assess the January transfer market and make the additions he needs to help guarantee survival.

Megson said: "What tends to happen in January is that during the first couple of weeks it is a seller's market, then it turns into a buyer's market when clubs realise they are not going to get the price they are looking for."

He added: "Expect is not the right word, hope would be more accurate but I am trying to bring in a few players."

Megson did introduce a couple of new faces for yesterday's last-gasp loss to Manchester United, including Portugal striker Ariza Makakula, who caught the eye with a combative performance until he ran out of steam midway through the second half.

However, with Bolton languishing in the bottom half of the table, Megson knows it is not enough.

"We are quite strong at centre-half but the three lads we had in the middle were our only recognised midfield players," he said.

"We have not scored the amount of goals we would like either.

"We were doing fine until the last six games, since when it has slowed, so it is a situation we would like to address."
