Notts County - Dave Kevan still doesn’t want full time job

Notts County sprung one of the biggest shocks of the season as the FA Cup left Premier League sides with a bloodied nose.

Whilst Wolves were going down at Crystal Palace in amazing circumstances, the League Two Magpies were flying high at the DW Stadium as they embarrassed Wigan.

It seemed that, having squandered a 2-0 lead in the home tie, County’s best chance of causing an upset had gone – don’t you believe it.

But despite the staggering 2-0 win on the Latics’ own turf, County’s caretaker boss Dave Kevan still maintains he doesn’t want the job full time despite being unbeaten in eight games.

He said: "I'm just trying to get on with things and keep the lads focused. Thankfully I've been able to do that because they're a great bunch. It's been a very enjoyable evening. Wigan put us under a lot of pressure but we held on and did very well.

“It was a very, very enjoyable and proud night, not just for me, but for all the staff and all the players. The biggest thing for me was seeing our supporters here. That just filled me with great pride and I am really pleased they have gone away really happy. They stayed with us.

"Make no mistake, we were up against a good team and we haven't had it all our own way but, in the end, we've all had a very memorable evening. It's a very tough game we've got in prospect (at Fulham). They're a top side, just like Wigan are. But we'll go there and see what happens.

"We approach every game the same and we make sure we do the right preparations. That's exactly what happened. Lee Hughes and Kasper Schmeichel have put on a top performance, just like all the other lads but they won't be fazed by going to Fulham."

Latics boss Roberto Martinez praised the Magpies for their victory but was less complimentary about his own side. A Premier League outfit losing at home to League Two opposition is a rare occurrence and Martinez knows it was a shock of seismic proportions.

"This is a day to congratulate Notts County and allow them to enjoy a huge achievement in going through to the fifth round," he said. "For us, it is to learn a few lessons, knowing that we have been a bit low in terms of confidence in front of goal.

"We just allowed ourselves to get frustrated with the performance. I think we all knew what to expect in this sort of game; they are going to get a lot of players behind the ball and work extremely hard.

"But we created a lot of chances. Probably the first one was a clear example of the game - in these situations you need to score the first goal and that changes the game completely.

"But you could see that we were getting frustrated and, even though we started well in the second half, we couldn't get the first goal. When that happens, there is that risk and you know you have a lot to lose. You are at home and the upset is on the cards, and I think we felt that way.”
