Wales’ boss John Toshack has been dealt yet another blow ahead of Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan with the news that West Ham midfielder Jack Collison will not make the trip through injury.
It means that four players have now withdrawn from the squad, and Toshack has just 19 players to choose from, including three goalkeepers. The only addition to the party has been
Swansea’s 20-year-old winger Shaun McDonald.
When the squad re-assembled at their training headquarters in London on Monday,
Collision, who aggravated his knee against Estonia on Friday, received a thorough examination by the medical team.
It was initially decided that Collision would travel to Baku and his fitness would be assessed after further treatment. However, after attempting to take part in a training session yesterday, it was decided that Collison was not fit enough to travel.
FAW spokesman Ceri Stennett, said: “A five-hour-plus flight would certainly not have helped Jack’s knee. And it was clear after training that there was no point taking a risk with him.”
FAW Ticket refund
Meanwhile, the FAW has agreed to pay for match tickets for 80 Welsh fans travelling to the match as a goodwill gesture due to the problems supporters have encountered trying to obtain visas for the trip.
The fans will be repaid after the game in Baku and an FAW statement read: “All supporters who have purchased tickets will be issued a refund.
“There will be approximately 80 Wales’ supporters in Baku for the match on Saturday, and the FAW wishes them all a safe outward and return journey.”
