England cap No.108 beckons for Becks
But that’s not David’s sole reason for signing up with Milan
As he prepares to make his AC Milan debut this evening, David Beckham insists his Italian job is not just a personal mission to extend his England career.
Milan take on Hamburg in a friendly in Dubai tonight, and Becks could make his Serie A bow against Roma on Sunday after more than proving his fitness and worth.
Of course, the former England skipper is hoping to win his 108th international cap - the late Bobby Moore as the nation’s second-highest appearance maker behind Peter Shilton – when Fabio Capello’s men take on Spain next month.
But achieving international longevity is not the sole purpose behind his temporary switch to AC during the MLS off season.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder has made no secret of his desire to continue playing for his country, and making an impact in Italy would undoubtedly help his cause. But Becks insists: “I didn't join Milan just for that reason. I have never played in Italy and I think it's one of the best leagues in the world.
"I want to concentrate on working with the team. I am willing to work really hard for my place in the squad.
"I always try to have no regrets in life, or in my career. I made the decision to go to LA two years ago and I've had a good time there."
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has been impressed with Beckham’s contribution and attitude and says: “He is a great champion - a very, very good player.
“He needs to work hard because there is a lot of competition in the squad. But we'll use him for sure."
Beckham added: "I'm always ready to play but I know the coach decides. Physically I know I need to work hard to reach 100 per cent, not just to be able to play but to play well.
