ENGLAND COUNTDOWN: England 'quietly confident' Becks will start - and Lamps is hopeful too!

By Dave Smith  September 04, 2003

David Beckham causes a stir whenever he's on public display - either on or off the field. Well now he's even hit the headlines because he was nowhere to be seen!

According to today's Sun, Becks caused concern within the England ranks because he changed his travel arrangements for his return from Spain and turned up at the training camp six hours late.

Apparently, FA chiefs didn't know where the skipper was and could not contact him to arrange a fitness test on the groin he injured playing for Real against Villareal on Tuesday night.

But fear not folks, Becks is not letting his country down and the early signs are that he will be fit to lead the team against Macedonia on Saturday, and Liechtenstein next Wednesday.

FA spokesman Adrian Bevington confirmed: "David had a medical when he arrived at the hotel and was found to have a tight groin. We are quietly confident he will be fit to play on Saturday. He will be assessed again to see if he can take part in training before the team flies to Macedonia."

Sven desperately needs his captain fantastic in his line-up for the trip to Skopje, especially following the loss of Scholes, Gerrard and Sinclair.

The England coach admitted earlier in the week that he 'just doesn't know' how his midfield will look on Saturday, but the injury crisis must surely mean Frank Lampard will get his chance to establish himself at the heart of the side. He certainly deserves it.

He was outstanding for Chelsea last season and despite the arrival of so many new, big name stars at the Bridge - especially fellow midfielders - he's still the man in possession and certainly doesn't look out of place.

The 25-year-old former West Ham man has been in and around England's senior squad for the last four years, after a lengthy spell in the Under 21s, but has only won 12 caps - seven as substitute.

He missed out on the World Cup squad last year but has proved in the last 15 months that he has taken his game to a new level and now merits the chance to hold down a regular starting place for his country. His cracking goal in the friendly against Croatia, and his dominant midfield display in general, will have done his chances no harm, and Lampard believes 'this is my time'.

He says: "The previous three or four games with England have been good for me and have thrown me into the spotlight from being on the fringes. My aim, though, is to be starting.

"I didn't go to the World Cup. So then I took it on myself to take more responsibility in matches. I did that at Chelsea last year and became more of a pivotal figure rather than someone who does well but doesn't control games. That is the biggest thing that has happened."

About the competition for places, for club and country, Lampard admts: "I am at the stage with both Chelsea and England where it's going to be a fight to keep my place. Playing week in, week out at Chelsea is a feat in itself at the moment.

"Yet I feel a lot more confident of starting games for England rather than being the one that travels and doesn't even get on the bench."
