Skipper Sol Campbell is one of three key Portsmouth players already ruled out of Saturday's Fratton Park clash with Hull through injury - and one of 15 whose futures at the club are in doubt with contracts expiring at the end of the season.
Pompey executive chairman Peter Storrie insists it is up to manager Tony Adams to decide who he wants to stay and who he wants to leave but the new manager, Campbell's former Arsenal and England team-mate, said: "In Sol's case, he'll make his own decision - and whatever it is, that's all right with me."
Campbell, 34, is currently sidelined by a toe injury - along with midfielders Lassana Diarra and Niko Kranjcar, who have ankle problems - and has still to be offered a new deal for next season.
Adams added: "He's his own man. He will do what he wants to do and I wouldn't insult Sol by pushing him in either direction
"He's been around the block and he's a great pro. I'm sure he will tell us in his own time what he wants to do next and that's fine. He's been fantastic for this club."
Occasionally linked in transfer speculation with Spanish club Villarreal, Campbell has confounded his critics with his early form this season, although just recently injuries have been a concern, with him missing three of the last five games.
But there is little doubt the powerfully-built centre-back wants to play on - ideally at Pompey - and it could come down to the question of whether he would be satisfied with a one-year or two-year agreement.
