Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is interested in bringing Jermain Defoe back to White Hart Lane if the England striker becomes available.
Defoe left Spurs for Portsmouth in January after finding his opportunities limited but the departures of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane means he would command a regular starting place if he moved back.
Redknapp, who heard fans sing Defoe's name during the win over Bolton, told talkSPORT: "If he ever came back up for sale then I'm sure we would be interested."
After arriving from Pompey at the weekend, Redknapp will have full control of transfers after Spurs chairman Daniel Levy scrapped the club's continental structure.
Spurs have previously been linked with Lassana Diarra, while Redknapp has been credited with resurrecting the careers of players such as England goalkeeper David James.
Defoe would offer options in attack as Redknapp currently has only two senior strikers, although Roman Pavlyuchenko and Darren Bent both scored against Bolton. He also has the on-loan Fraizer Campbell, who is unproven in the top flight.
Redknapp is expected to use Luka Modric in a free role behind a lone striker until January after the Croatia playmaker put in a man-of-the-match performance against Bolton.
Modric, the £16.5million summer signing from Dinamo Zagreb, had struggled to make an impact and looked lightweight until Redknapp's arrival.
"I felt that's his position, behind the front man," Redknapp said. "That's where he needs to play so that's where we decided to play him against Bolton.
"If you give him the ball, he'll do special things and has got great awareness. And he mucks in as well."
