Burnley boss Owen Coyle believes his side will learn crucial lessons from their 4-1 defeat to Tottenham in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final at White Hart Lane.
The Championship side took an early lead but, after a strong second-half fight back from Spurs, the Premier League team will go into the second leg on January 21 with a commanding advantage.
"These are great learning experiences," Coyle told the club's official website. "But there was an opportunity to put ourselves in a great position to reach a major final."
He added: "We just didn't do it well enough in the second half and conspired to our own downfall.
"I have obviously been trying to bolster that defensive line and whether we get the finances to try and do that, I will continue to do it."
