Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins felt his side "didn`t get the rub of the green" as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Southend.

Adkins was forced to play a makeshift Iron rearguard due to injuries and suspensions, but his side had their chances with Gary Hooper being denied twice by good saves from Steve Mildenhall and Paul Hayes heading against the crossbar.

He said: "We created enough chances to win but we didn't get the rub of the green. We must be as professional as we can because it`s just not going for us at the moment."

He added: "I think we started brightly and did well. They are a big physical side and we dealt with that.

"We had some great chances and their keeper made some great saves but then, against the run of play in my opinion, they went and scored. This is a hard place to come to and they got a second goal."
