Brighton boss Gus Poyet has opened talks with Newcastle over extending winger Kazenga LuaLua's loan spell until the end of the season.

LuaLua's initial month-long deal expires after the trip to Colchester a week on Monday, but Poyet hopes Newcastle's current form will mean that Toon boss Chris Hughton will allow the 19-year-old to remain on the south coast.

"We would like to keep him for the rest of the season and we have been in touch. I hope we can finalise it this week," said Poyet.

He added: "I'm pleased Newcastle keep winning. Maybe we can keep him but I will have to speak to Chris Hughton."
