Southend chairman Ron Martin has revealed that Peter Clarke has rejected the opportunity to discuss a new deal at Roots Hall.
The influential defender is out of contract in the summer and the club are keen to tie Clarke down to a new contract, but he has so far rebuffed their advances.
"Peter is a really good professional but he and his agent have wished to keep their options open and although we wished to extend his contract before the season starts, and would also offer him a new contract, he has not to date wished to engage in those discussions," said Martin.
"I guess we will find out what his future holds over the next month or two when Peter himself decides."
