Colchester will attempt to recoup the fee they paid for David Perkins after the midfielder handed in a transfer request.

Perkins joined the Us from Rochdale last summer for a six-figure sum but has failed to settle and is thought to favour a move back north.

"David understands that any transfer would have a financial element to it," said United chief executive Steve Bradshaw.

"He was bought by the football club for a six-figure fee only 12 months ago.

"He is also absolutely committed to taking every playing opportunity while he is here, and we all hope David is able to settle and can commit to a long-term future at the club."
