Delight for Adams…despair for Reid…Paolo wants to 'give something back'…Government seek Sky help

By Dave Smith  September 16, 2003

Micky Adams was happy to praise his players, and man of the match Paul Dickov was quick to credit his teammates for last night's 4-0 win at the Walkers Stadium, but Peter Reid was totally damning in his criticism of his mob who he accused of lacking effort and passion on a night to forget for the Leeds boss.

No such problem for the Leicester manager, however, as his players showed that they've got a fair amount of guile to go with the guts City have long been renowned for. But for Leeds keeper Paul Robinson it could have been a whole lot worse for the visitors and it's a case of 'back to the drawing board' for Reid whose side defended appallingly, it has to be said.

It was certainly a baptism of fire for Brazilian World Cup winner Roque Junior and a case of 'welcome to the Premiership' as he and his fellow defenders were put to the sword by an energetic Leicester side which thoroughly deserved their first win of the season. And, as Adams said afterwards 'it could have been a wider margin of victory'.

But he added: "We mustn't be greedy - I'll take the four! In fact, I would have taken any margin of victory, that's how much it meant to us because that first win is important. When you don't get your wins early doors it becomes a problem, but that will do our confidence a power of good.

"We've a shape at the club we work hard on. If that's a little bit boring and repetitive for them then I'm sorry, but I'll take results like these if that's the case."

Dickov, meanwhile, recognised it was the Foxes' work ethic - which Leeds were sadly lacking - which produced an emphatic win and the two-goal hero said: "From the back, right through the team, everyone worked their socks off.

"It was very important to get that first win under our belts, especially after the loss at Villa, and to bounce back in front of our own fans to win 4-0 is better than anyone could have expected."

Reid though was left to reflect on a bad night at the office and his post-match assessment didn't make very good listening for his players, as he said: "Were never at the races. I thought we had turned the corner, but we didn't compete and we weren't up for it.

"It looked as if they wanted to win it more than us. We lacked attitude and desire and we now need to get back on the training ground and get going again."

Manchester City's injury plagued star Paulo Wanchope has revealed that he rejected a move to Spain in the summer because he wants to repay the faith of the fans who stood by him during two years of injury hell.

The enigmatic Costa Rican, who made his first start for almost two years in City's 4-1 demolition of Aston Villa on Sunday, explained: "I heard some rumours, then a journalist phoned from Spain, so I went into see the boss and he told me there had been an offer.

"He said he wanted me to stay but it was my decision. I didn't want to go because I feel I owe something to the club and its supporters. I haven't played for almost two years, yet people still want me. That was so nice to hear because I am really happy at City and I want to give something back.''

The Government has announced that it will be appealing for the help of Sky TV in deterring England fans from traveling to Turkey for next month's crucial Euro 2004 qualifier.

Sports Minister Richard Caborn has responded to a proposal from his pre-decessor Tony Banks that Sky share live coverage of the game in Istanbul with BBC or ITV in the hope fans stay away.

Banks, in a House of Commons motion, said: "I want to make sure we remove the last vestige of excuse for England fans to go to Istanbul. I might be excessively alarmist, but from my bitter experience of 2000, I fear UEFA are looking to make an example of England.

"I do not want to give UEFA an excuse and should England be banned from 2004, then they will almost definitely be banned from the 2006 World Cup."

Caborn, meanwhile, told the Daily Telegraph: "As a result of representations from colleagues we will approach broadcasters to share the match for this unique one-off occasion."
