MK Dons manager Roberto Di Matteo refused to criticise substitute Sam Baldock for a glaring late miss as his side drew 1-1 play-off semi-final first leg draw with Scunthorpe.

Martyn Woolford the hosts ahead in the 12th-minute at Glanford Park, only for Aaron Wilbraham to pull Di Matteo's slick side back into it with his 17th goal of the season.

The Dons went on to enjoy the better of the clash and created the clearer chances, with Miguel Angel Llera and Baldock both guilty of glaring misses for the visitors.

"I think it was a very exciting game," he said. "You look back and wish we'd scored with Sam because it was a great chance. But we have tried our best and if we don't score, we don't score. At least we create chances."

He added: "We always go out and try to win games and I think the whole team had a good game. Maybe one or two players didn't play as well as they can but generally we did pretty well.

"We said to them to `be patient. It's over 180 minutes, let's play our game and stick to our game plan' and that's what we did."
