George Boyd has enjoyed a sensational start to life in the Football League as he is an integral part of the Peterborough bandwagon.
After joining Posh for £240,000 from Stevenage Borough, in the transfer window of 2007, Boyd has enjoyed two promotions in his first two full seasons at the club.
Not only that but Boyd has been earmarked as a player with eye catching talent as he has twice been voted into the PFA Divisional team of the Year.
And to cap it all, Boyd has now received an international squad call up. He has been called up to the Scotland 'B' squad to play Northern Ireland next Wednesday.
Boyd, who qualifies by way of his Scottish grandfather, was a last minute call up by Scotland manager George Burley, but it is indicative of his growing stature in the game
The Championship beckons for Boyd and
Peterborough and trips to the likes of Coventry, Sheffield United, Reading and West Bromwich Albion could all be on the horizon when the fixtures are announced in June.
But Boyd is intending to enjoy the adulation at present before focusing on the challenge ahead as Posh try to upset the big boys in the Championship.
Givemefootball’s Ian Clarkson spoke exclusively to Boyd and found him in celebratory mood.
WE SPOKE 12 MONTHS AGO AND YOU COULDN’T BELIEVE THAT YOU HAD BEEN PROMOTED TO LEAGUE ONE – WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS NOW?
“It was a dream come true when we were promoted as the lads were waiting around for the other results to come through. It was a great day for the boys and we had a great celebration after the game. It is a great achievement for everyone at the club to achieve successive promotions. It has been a brilliant season.”
THAT IS SUCCESSIVE YEARS YOU HAVE BEEN CHOSEN BY YOUR CONTEMPORARIES AS ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE LEAGUE – YOU MUST BE PLEASED?
“It is a great honour for me to be selected in the Divisional Team again after being in the League Two team last year. I would never have thought that when I was playing for Stevenage in the Conference (Blue Square Premier League) two years ago.”
IS THERE A LOT OF TALENT IN THE NON-LEAGUE?
“Half of our squad is from non league originally so it shows the talent that there is at that level. We have (Craig) Mackail-Smith and (Aaron) Mclean up front, which just shows the talent around. I think that a lot of players just need to be given their opportunity to show what they can do.”
HOW FAR CAN THIS TEAM GO?
“We will do ourselves justice next year there is no problem about that as we have a lot of talented players. The gaffer won’t let us rest on our laurels and he will want us to push on again next season. He is ambitious like all of us at the club are.”
WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING UNDER DARREN FERGUSON?
“He just us wants to the best that we can and makes a good team with the Chairman as they are both very ambitious. We will go in and keep that winning mentality and this time next year you never know…”
