GAME OF THE WEEKEND
Southampton 4-1 Gillingham
Alan Pardew was beginning to feel the heat at
Southampton after recording just one win all season, but they finally cleared their pre-season points deficit in style with a resounding 4-1 thumping of
Gillingham.
GOAL OF THE WEEKEND
Luke Rooney – Gillingham
Rooney capped his first start for Gillingham with a stunning goal against Southampton on Saturday, which was the one plus in a 4-1 defeat.
"I don’t usually celebrate goals although inside I’m buzzing but that time I had to run on the pitch," said manager Mark Stimson. "The kid’s goal was exceptional and I got carried away.”
STAR OF THE WEEKEND
James Henry – Millwall
The on-loan Reading winger terrorised Tranmere’s defence all afternoon and bagged a hat-trick into the bargain as the
Lions went nap against hapless Rovers.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND
John Barnes insists he is going nowhere after
Tranmere’s ninth defeat in 11 fixtures – a 5-0 drubbing at Millwall.
"I'm not going anywhere, I'm not walking. Obviously, after losing 5-0 the pressure is greater. Pressure is what you make it and I'm trying to make the team play well.
"When it goes well you're a hero. When it goes badly, you're a villain. Possibly if I'm not the manager then we would be getting a bit less attention, but we have lost seven out of eight games and no matter who you are, that's not good."
CONTROVERSIAL MOMENT OF THE WEEKEND
Stockport manager Gary Ablett is not happy with the referee’s decision to award a penalty in their 2-0 defeat at Southend.
“The referee had his hands behind his back at first so I don’t understand why he changed his mind. He was affected by the linesman with that one. I’m disappointed with the decision but there you go. There were a lot of poor decisions from the officials out there.”
SHOCK OF THE WEEKEND
Not really a shock but
Leeds failed to win for the second home game in succession!
After a record breaking run that had swept aside all and sundry at Elland Road, Simon Grayson’s men have now drawn with Carlisle and Charlton in the space of four days. Nevertheless, Grayson’s boys are still top of League One.
